The History of the Whiskey Sour

The whiskey sour is a representative of a whole genre of cocktails: thesour. Other popular members of the genus include the Margarita (tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice) and the Daiquiri (Cuban Rum, Simple Syrup, Lime Juice). Sours are always characterized by the base spirit, as well as a source of acid and a sweetener.l.

The Whiskey Sour was mentioned by name as early as 1862 in Jerry Thomas' „The Bartender's Guide“ however, the idea of mixing whiskey or other spirits with lemon juice and sugar is much older. This mix was already used by seafarers in the 15th century „in vogue“ to prevent scurvy with the vitamin C in lemons. It wasn't until almost 90 years later that the first recipes appeared with an ingredient that is now widely used in bars: the egg white. If it is shaken vigorously with a cocktail, it develops a significant head of foam and makes the drinknk „fluffier“.

Historically, Jerry Thomas's primary rye whiskey was used as the base at the time, as it was the favorite American whiskey of the time. How to Whiskey Sour - You're looking for an easy recipe for the perfect, delicious whiskey sourr?
Here are a few tips and tricks to help you and your friends mix a perfect Whiskey Sour at home, in just 7 simple steps!

HOW TO: WHISKEY SOUR - Classic

You can easily create the perfect classic whiskey sour with just three basic ingredients:

6 CL STORK CLUB Straight Rye Whiskey
3 CL lemon juice, freshly squeezed
2 CL sugar syrup
Optional : 2 cl egg white

1) Good whiskey

First you take a shaker and pour 6 CL STORK CLUB Straight Rye Whiskey into it.

As with cooking, the motto for cocktails is that one Drink can only ever be as good as its worst ingredient. So damn it, grab a decent whiskey for the whiskey sour – even if you don't have a STORK CLUB handy! ;-)

2) Fresh lemon juice

Next comes 3 cl lemon juice, freshly squeezed.

Never use anything other than freshly squeezed lemon juice!
No, no plastic lemons, no preserved organic -Lemon juice, no lime juice, only one currency counts: freshly squeezed lemon juice.


3) sugar syrup

Following this, pours 2 cl of sugar syrup into the shaker.

Pay attention to the balance of sweetness and acidity!
Sour is not fun in this case. If the Whiskey Sour is too sour, it will appear flat; if it is too sweet, you won't want a second one. And from a Whiskey Sour you should ALWAYS want a second one!

4) Egg White (Optional)

Traditionally, 2 CL of protein is also added.

If protein is shaken vigorously with a cocktail, it develops a significant head of foam and makes the drink "fluffier".

Alternatively, if you don't like protein in the cocktail, you can either omit it completely or use, for example, aquafaba made from chickpeas, protein powder for cocktails or other cocktail foamers.

5) Shake it

If you use egg white or a protein substitute, you should first shake the drink for a round without ice cubes (a so-called 'dry shake') until a nice froth forms.

6) Enough ice

Then you add the ice cubes and shake the whole thing until the drink is ice cold!

As with a good meal, the serving temperature is also decisive for the taste of a cocktail.

7) Serve & Enjoy

Finally, strain over fresh ice cubes into a tumbler glass, optionally garnish with a lemon zest and enjoy!

The New York Sour

6 CL STORK CLUB Rye Malt Whiskey
3 CL lemon juice, freshly squeezed
2 CL sugar syrup
2 CL red wine

Optional: 2 CL protein

Preparation: Put all the ingredients except for the red wine in a shaker, fill with ice cubes and shake vigorously. Strain into a tumbler over fresh ice cubes. Then carefully pour the red wine over the drink so that a red layer forms.

To the rye malt

The Continental Sour

6 CL STORK CLUB Rye Malt Whiskey
3 cl lemon juice, freshly squeezed
2 cl sugar syrup
2 cl port wine(Recommendation: Ferreira Ruby Port)

Optional: 2 cl egg white

Preparation: Put all the ingredients except for the red wine in a shaker, fill with ice cubes and shake vigorously. Strain into a tumbler over fresh ice cubes. Then carefully pour the red wine over the drink so that a red layer forms.ildet.

The Smoky Whiskey Sour

3 CL STORK CLUB Smoky Rye Whiskey
3 CL STORK CLUB Straight Rye Whiskey
3 CL lemon juice, freshly squeezed
2 CL sugar syrup

Preparation: Put all ingredients in a shaker, fill with ice cubes and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
